About this page

This page lists the XLIFF files that a locale folder contains and what each one holds. It complements Translation of XLIFF files, which explains how to translate them.

The easiest way to start a new language is to copy the es or it folder, rename it to your locale code, and rename each file inside to carry your locale code. See Supporting a new Locale.

File names

A file name has this form:

<TableName>_<locale>.xliff
<TableName>_<locale>.<SplitId>.xliff

The table name starts with a prefix that tells where the texts are used:

Prefix Used in
XWVM.Common Both X-wing and TIE Fighter
XWVM.xwing X-wing only
XWVM.tf TIE Fighter only
XWVM.Core The whole game
XWVM.UI Menus and screens that do not depend on the game

The texts of the tf and xwing files cover the same topics, each for its own game.

Files shared by all games

Table name What it contains
XWVM.UI.EscMenu The in-game menu and settings: labels, buttons and tooltips. The largest of the interface files.
XWVM.UI.GameLibrary The main menu where you pick, add and remove games.
XWVM.Core.Games The names of the games.
XWVM.Common.PlayerActions Messages that confirm what the player just did, such as changing the fire mode or arming weapons.
XWVM.Common.CombatVocab Short words and labels of the flight display: command abbreviations, "Unknown", captured and incapacitated, mission status.
XWVM.Common.MissionEvents Messages shown during a mission when something happens, such as the mission starting or ending, reinforcements requested, or craft entering the sector. Many of them use species data from the CSV files.
XWVM.Common.System.TacticalDisplay Labels of the tactical display: orders, time left, current target, distance.
XWVM.Common.System.TargetComponents Names of craft parts that can be targeted, such as the main hull, wings and fuselage.
XWVM.Common.TriggersAndGoals Names of mission conditions, triggers and goals.
XWVM.Common.Hangar Descriptions of craft and their weapons, weapon names with plurals, and the formats of ranks and squadron names.
XWVM.Common.RanksAwards Pilot ranks, awards and flight badges.
XWVM.Common.Rooms Labels and tooltips of the rooms you visit, such as the Astromech Workshop.

Files that exist once per game

Each of these files exists with the xwing prefix and with the tf prefix.

Table name (after the game prefix) What it contains
Concourse The concourse screens: navigation, pilot registration, briefing questions.
ClipSubtitles Subtitles for the voice clips.
PilotLogMerits The pilot log, merits, statistics and high scores.
Tips The tips shown to the player.
TourNames The names of the tours and mission groups.

Original game texts

Files named XWVM.xwing.OriginalStrings_<locale>.<SplitId>.xliff hold the texts that come from the original games. They are the longest files. Other languages than English and German provide them; English and German read these texts from the original game files.

Split What it contains
tour1 to tour5 The tours: title, description, crawl, and for every mission its title, description, briefing and in-mission texts.
xcombat, ycombat, acombat, bcombat, bonus The historical combat missions, grouped by craft.
ppg The Pilot Proving Ground missions.
cutscenes The texts shown in the cutscenes.
intro The intro crawl.
credits The credits.

Keys such as Mission.<name>.Title or Briefing.<name>.Text.1 tell you what a text is and which mission it belongs to.

Where to start

The file sizes differ a lot. One order that gives you a playable result early:

  1. XWVM.UI.GameLibrary, XWVM.UI.EscMenu and XWVM.Core.Games for the menus.
  2. The CSV files with craft names.
  3. XWVM.Common.* files for flight and hangar texts.
  4. The files that exist once per game, for the game you want to play first.
  5. The OriginalStrings files, which are the largest.

Missing texts show in English, so you can test your translation after each step.
